2019 People of the Big River Field Class

July 15, 2019 Monday We woke up at 6:30 am and we made our lunch and ate our breakfast then we headed out to our volunteer group’s one of the people we was helping was Tom Walker he is Riparian Restoration we was pulling weeds out of the water and we had partners and my partner was Juan Valladares I kept falling and he would help me when I would fall or when I get stuck in the mud at the bottom. I did fall though when I was in there but Tom and Juan helped me up, I got scared I thought I would have gotten wet but I didn’t well I did but not a lot just a part of my shirt and my knees somehow I don’t know how my knee’s got wet. I forgot my beanie, my rubber bands, and my headphones there I didn’t mean to I just forgot them there. After we was done helping him we went to go help Pete powers and he does Aspen Restoration and I had the same we had to cut down plants and baby tree’s I felt bad because the tree’s was baby’s they would have gotten big and helped the mountains and plus the

July 14, 2019 Sunday This morning we woke up at 6:30 am because David was leaving today. I was still tired though when we was all getting ready and making breakfast. After breakfast we went to walk around the big river and we walked around just a little bit of it though I had fun walking around it, well besides going a crossed the bridges I don’t like crossing them or walking under them, I don’t know why though I just don’t like them. I had fun walking around though, even though we got separated from half of the group the group I was walking with we went the wrong way. Then Jessica had Eric come look for us and he found us and called her and asked for direction to her. We found her it took us a while to find her; we kept going the wrong way. July 13, 2019 Saturday We got to sleep in today tell 8 am but I woke up at 7:30 am then fell back to sleep ‘cause I was still sleepy. Then we got into our groups, got ready to set up our trail cams. My group went a crossed the road and we found a water pit thing, we put one where they can going down the hill to the water that is where one cam is and the second one is on the other side of the other water pit up the hill, there is a lot of butterfly’s at the watering holes and on the way up to the second cam we founded two eagle feathers. It was funny after putting up the second cam same was dancing funny in front of it. I have a video of it. The third one was up the way from the second one we had trouble putting up the third one we was messing around with it the we finally got it at a good angel. July 12, 2019 Friday This morning we woke up at 6:30 am, my group had dishes and I helped out on the last half because I was still eating my breakfast but then again there were not a lot of dishes this morning so we didn’t really remember what we did. After we did all of our chores we got on our vans and we headed out to Lava lands we walked around this little this it went in a circle and it was a mile and we take a lot of pictures up their it was fun but I didn’t like it a whole lot because there was a lot of walking and it was hot. When we got to the top of the little trail there was a nice view we have a lot of pictures. Then we went to the top of the hill next to it, we got up their by a bus and walked around a circle where the volcano lava went to the whole was big. After that some of us walked down and some went down on the bus, I took the bus down that would have token me forever to go down the hill. July 11, 2019 Thursday This morning well some of us woke up at 6 am, some earlier to take a shower. Today’s chore for my group was breakfast so I was half way awake so I don’t really remember what I grabbed. We are leaving the fire department so we had to get ready. Then we put our tents down, we went on another tour of their mountains it was nice to see even though I don’t remember the first half because I took a nap and when I woke up I was not up all the way. After that we went to the museum (the Twanta) they’re elders where there and we got to know some of their story’s and what they have been threw when they was younger. When we introduced our self I said it in our way when we say “My name is” and when it was over they was talking to me and asking me questions about me and my family, who was my parents. July 10, 2019 Wednesday We woke up at 6:30 am and packed everything up and went to the fire department so we can talk about where we can sleep there and we can take a warm shower. After that we went to their confronts room and plug in our stuff and take notes about Bob S. and Bradley D. they was telling us about them and telling us about them but Brad was talking fast so I did not catch a whole lot but I got some things, then we watched a video that told us about tradition fires and they are trying to do it but not do it at the same time. Then we went to their mountains I liked it, it was pretty well besides the part they are working on it was all black because they burned it so the trees can grow and that new plants can grow and that animals can come back and eat. Where their long house is very beautiful the water felt good it was cold it was nice, I just loved it, and it smelt nice like fresh water. We also ate our lunch there. July 9, 2019 Tuesday We all woke up today at 6 am then we started to pack so we can go too our new camp site. I already forgot where we are going. After me and my friend put down our tent and put away our stuff. We went to go see if anyone else needed help we helped two people and it was fine and when we got everything packed we forgot to pack a pole in the tent so now we well I have it on the car in the pocket in the back of the chair. Before we left we went to go get our trail cam’s   and the one me and Alex put up we put it on picture mode not video mode so we did not see what ate our tuna. That is one mistake we learned to put it on video not picture. Now we are at warm springs it’s not nice put it will do, I like ours better are now but it is not their mountains so I can’t say anything yet but I don’t really know what there mountains really look like. July 17, 2019 Wednesday We woke up at 7:30 am this morning. We ate breakfast and made our lunch and Alex G. met us today again and we went to the Klamath fishery department and he was telling us about the 5 different fishes and how the dams are affecting the fishes spawning areas. The lost fish river, short nose fish is almost instanced the baby’s fishes can barely survive because the water is bad and that the fishes water land is smaller. Then we went to where they kept the fishes the 3 and 4 year olds. The 3 year olds are in the middle and the 4 year olds are on the outside. The lady that keeps care of the fishes she cleans the 3 year olds bin first, she said she don’t clean it all the way because they feed off of it then she cleans the pips. We went to one of the dam and talked about it. We ate lunch their too then we head to a small town to wash my friend’s clothing. After her clothing was done we head back to our camp site and started helping cook stew. We had an elder come to

July 16, 2019 Tuesday We woke up at 5:30 am because we was going to our new camp site. On the way to the new camp site we stopped at Crater Lake National. I think that the lake was really pretty and it was blue, I loved it. We are Klamath Collier State park we got here around 3:30 pm I think. Alex Gonyaw met us at Klamath collier State park 3:40 pm he took us to a little stream that had otter’s in it. We didn’t see any otter’s when we went. Alex was telling us about some plants on the way to the river site. We came back to our camp site and finished unpacking.    We made dinner and we talked for a while and took showers and finally fell asleep.

July 8, 2019 Monday We all woke up today at 6:30 am, I helped make pancakes for breakfast. It was funny one of my group members burnt a pancake. After breakfast we went to potato hill. When we were climbing up potato hill we could see some of our huckleberry’s growing they were small and green, some of us made it up to the top and some half way to the top, the rest not even half way. I don’t blame them when I first had to claim up potato hill I didn’t want to- it was hard to get half way up. I made it up to the top though! I was really happy I didn’t think I could make it up to the top, but there was another group up their already we left in groups. When we got to potato hill most of our camp member never went to the top of potato hill, beside five of us. When me and my friend made it to the top there was a group already on top of potato hill. July 7, 2019 Sunday We all got up at 6:30 am this morning, and got ready for breakfast. After we all ate we all had to get our chores done and I had dishes, we are all in groups so we all can help with all of the chores like I said yesterday. After we did all of our chores we got into our new groups to go put up our tail cams, In my group there was Sam, Jaz ,Alex, Briseida and our group name was Red Raccoons.   My group went to Castilly road, one of our trail cams was by the little river and one of the other trail cams up the ways from the river where we put the other trail cam, on each cam we put cans of tuna on logs in front of them. On our last cam we put on the other side of the road and put two cans of tuna and some bacon left over from breakfast on some logs. We put the cams on trees some was high some was low. After setting up the cams we went back to the camp site. We all went to camp Chaparral, we will be helping them for the 8 year olds that are coming tomorrow. We helped

July 6, 2019 Saturday On our way up to the foot of the cascade mountain camp cite we seen a brown bear. I was happy to see the bear; it has been a while since I have seen one. When we got to the camp cite we got changed so we could swim in the Klickitat River. I didn’t jump in the Klickitat River because it was too cold for me; instead I slowly walked into the river. Me and my friend went over to a log that is in the river, we were supposed to jump off of the log but she ended up falling and I just jumped in and did a belly flop, it hurt! But I’m fine!   After that everyone else finally came and we went to set up our tents, it was hard for me and my friend we did not know how to put up our tent.   Then one of our camp leaders started to cook dinner, we all have chores I was supposed to help cook dinner but me and my group could not because we didn’t know our chores yet so we didn’t help. We all rotate our chores after each meal.   After dinner we sat by the camp fire, Don Teakheal
